Corporate culture
Malaysian culture is strongly influenced by the ethnic and background of different race. However, it is the duty of Malaysians to build up the correct corporate culture in an organisation. Having sailed through a few decades in an organisation in Malaysian context, I saw the changes in the organisation, or to be more specific, the office culture which is not a shift for the better but the behaviour tend to be looser, law to be not abided closely, and respect for the management tend to be deteriorating. It is something urgent to be pondered about when the office environemnt is still not out of control.
Our office hour is supposed to be from 8:00a.m. - 5:00p.m. with an hour of lunch break from 1:00p.m. to 2:00p.m.. If the top management with the help of all the subordinates can maximise the time, the productivity is also maximised. However, the scenerio in the office now is unbelievable. Staff punch in at 8:30a.m.(30 minutes late), noisy for another 30 minutes, then off to the canteen for breakfast. They take more than one hour to have their "makan" and back to office at around 10:30a.m. The office becomes noisy agian and by 11:00a.m., all are gone again as everybody has to "ambil anak". zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. What type of culture is this? How do you expect Malysian prodicutivity to be high?
Malaysia is a society full of tolerance which of course has its pros and cons. Rules are guidelines but when there is too much tolerance, there is no more rules. People cannot imagine when the date line is the time for them to start working on it. The definittion and interpretation of punctuality is sort of totally different from what I understand. On the contrary, I have to be very " tolerant" and very "considerate" in order to make my life easier and to lessen the tension working under such culture. In other words, I need to be part of the organisation which is possessing a corporate culture which i can't really accept but I need to accept, or otherwise, I need to make a decision to leave for the better.
